HOP Kits?
HOP kits for genetic risk screening are small boxes that contain the saliva sample collection instructions and tools needed at no cost. HOP’s genetic screening panel includes more than 30 genes associated with inherited cancer syndromes, including HBOC and Lynch syndrome, which if positive can put individuals at a higher risk for cancer than the general population; about 5-10% of cancers have an inherited cause.
Each HOP kit comes with:
• instructions
• mouthwash
• a tube to collect your saliva
• a plastic bag to seal the tube
• pre-paid mailer for you to return your sample.
HOP kits can be mailed to your Oregon address and returned with a pre-paid envelope. Results will be available within 4 months once your sample is received. Participants will receive a notification once their results are available in the HOP account.
Negative results (no genetic risk variant found) are returned via the HOP app along with more information about the screening. Positive results (genetic risk found) are returned at no cost by phone with an OHSU genetic counselor to explain the result and recommend the next steps to reduce cancer risks. Our HOP participant navigator will follow up with participants who receive a positive result to ensure they have all the necessary information and resources.
